Mobilizer (Full Time)

The Independent Association of Publishers’ Employees (IAPE) Local 1096 TNG-CWA is seeking a New York-Based mobilizer for a one-year term to support the local’s campaign for a new collective bargaining agreement.

The mobilizer will report to the President and will work with other union leaders across the U.S. and Canada to help build out a structure benchmarked by member engagement. Some travel is required. The position offers a  competitive salary and great benefits.

IAPE is a labor union representing more than 1,200 members, including journalists at The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s. It is a local of The NewsGuild-Communications Workers of America.

Key Responsibilities:

Work with local leadership to develop a strategic mobilizing plan that will include actions to be taken at individual locations and across membership  

Build and train network of regional mobilizing coordinators and location mobilizers envisioning a 10:1 or 12:1 ratio

Identify, train and develop member leaders and strong internal committees

Work with union president to develop training programs on union rights and collective bargaining  

Help plan and coordinate other regular events in support of the collective bargaining campaign

 

Qualifications:

1-3 years labor organizing experience required; additional experience working in media sector and understanding of journalism a strong plus

A strong commitment to building a diverse and member-driven union

Demonstrated leadership abilities; must be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and writing skills

Ability to work irregular hours, long evenings and occasional weekends

Ability to quickly and efficiently perform administrative tasks necessary for the mobilizing campaign (producing organizing materials, maintaining confidential databases, drafting and disseminating campaign correspondence, etc.)
