Nasty Weather

March began with some nasty weather hitting the East Coast and we just wanted to avoid any confusion about the rules about reporting to work when the weather turns treacherous.

Here's the deal: under the terms of a 1997 deal between Dow Jones and IAPE, "Employees will be paid if a governmental agency declares a state of emergency which prevents the employee from using the roads or public transportation he or she uses to get to work."

In short, if there's a state of emergency and the roads you use are closed, you can stay home and you'll get paid (without having to use a personal day or vacation day or sick day.)

If it's dangerous, but not an official state of emergency, you can stay home (make sure you call the office) but you'll lose a day.

If you take your life in your hands and struggle through an ice storm or blizzard to get to work, you might get a pat on the back— but there's nothing extra in the paycheck.

Take a look at the '97 memo and if you have any questions or problems, contact the office at union@iape1096.org or call the office at 609-275-6020.
