About the News Prize
The North Star News Prize recognizes people of color who have made a significant contribution to journalism, media and communications, and the public’s understanding of the struggle for social justice.
North Star Fund takes its name from the newspaper that Frederick Douglass founded in 1847. He called his journal The North Star, evoking the journey —infused with peril, and with hope — to freedom along the Underground Railroad. Douglass admonished, "In order for justice to be done, we must not be silent." North Star Fund is a keeper of that outspoken tradition, supporting the innovative groups that continue to break the silence and speak up for equality, economic justice, and peace.
