Bargaining Update: 08.15.07
We met with the company in another off-the-record session on Wednesday August 15th, aimed at closing the gap that remains between us.
While we did manage to make some progress in some areas, there's still a very real difference over the core issues that matter to you most — pay and health benefits.
We think we can move the company away from their most recent proposal, one which would have meant a $7,300 pay cut after the effects of inflation and health premiums. We have made it clear to them that you simply won't accept a pay cut, and we are standing by that at the table. But our words by themselves aren't going to be enough.
Our efforts at the table, while they are very important, are less important than what you do away from the table.
We've told you that repeatedly, and you have responded. You have stood up, held meetings, demonstrated, agitated and made your voices heard. Managers have been surprised at your unity and determination, and your willingness to act together. Your support for one another has truly stunned them, and it has helped your cause.
Now, if we are to have any hope of getting a pay increase instead of a pay cut, we need to keep doing these things — and do more. Over the coming weeks your stewards will let you know what is being planned, and they would be eager to hear your thoughts. So don't hesitate to let your stewards know what you are prepared to do, and don't hesitate to pass on your ideas.
As always, we are eager to hear your thoughts and ideas.
